Columbus---Extra points do count, just ask the Fort Valley State Wildcats. The Wildcats botched a snap on the potential game tying extra point with just under a minute to play, giving Albany State a 20-19 win in the 15th annual Fountain City Classic.
Albany State fell behind early in the contest, spotting the Wildcats a 13-3 lead before mounting their comeback in the second half. ASU quarterback Uyl Joyner drove the Rams down the field on the opening possession of the second half and capped the drive off with a three yard score to pull the Rams within three, 13-10.
After a safety, the Rams took the lead for good when Joyner connected with Dontreal Williams on a 14 yard touchdown pass. ASU's two point conversion was successful, giving them a 20-13 lead.
Fort Valley State appeared to do enough to force overtime when Adam Bailey reeled in a Willie Copeland touchdown, but the ensuing botched extra point sealed the deal for an ASU win.
Albany State (10-0, 8-0) caps off an undefeated season for the first time since 1997 with the win. The Rams also earn the number one seed from the Southeast region and will get a bye in the first round of the Division II playoffs next week. ASU has now won 18 straight games, the longest streak in Division II.
