Gunman takes six people hostage

October 20, 2004

Albany-- It started as a boyfriend stalking his ex-girlfriend, then escalated into six people being held hostage in an apartment, surrounded by the SWAT team and dozens of officers.

Police were called to the apartment on Broadway Street a little after 3:00AM Wednesday. When they could not get anyone to answer the door, officers left. But neighbors called Police back again minutes later.

This time a woman answered the door, and officers demanded to come in. Lt. Kenn Singleton said "That's when the victim stated that the suspect, Ayman Hunter, age 22, was holding the victim plus five other individuals inside the apartment by gun."

Officers snatched a woman to safety from this doorway, leaving the gunman inside with five other victims. The SWAT team and police negotiators were called to the standoff. Police won't identify the hostages. Over a two hour period, negotiators talked the gunman into letting them go.

"Our negotiators did talk this individual into letting two to three victims out of the apartment, and then they all came out."

While the last victim was coming out the front door, the gunman tried to escape out the apartments back window. He was tackled by police quickly. No shots were fired, and all the hostages were unhurt.

Lt. Singleton said "Right, we're happy that it did end in this manner."

Ayman Hunter was arrested and charged with kidnapping and false imprisonment. He is being held in the Dougherty County Jail.

Albany Police will not say why Hunter took the six hostage, or what he wanted. They say the investigation is still underway.
