Fitzgerald- An assessment team has recommended the Fitzgerald Police Department be certified.
It's a goal Chief Bill Smallwood says he's been working toward since March of 2003. Only 92 of the state's 460 law enforcement agencies has achieved certification.
"We've really been working had towards this and it was good to see the assessors come and go and give us a satisfactory rating," says Smallwood.
He says certification will also lower the liability insurance for his 29 sworn officers. The department will know if they've been approved in January, but so far no one has ever been turned down by the certification committee if they've gotten a favorable assessment.
