New police chief in Dawson

October 13, 2004

Dawson-- Sumter County's chief deputy is now Dawson's police chief.

Charlie Whitehead accepted the job Wednesday. Tuesday night, city council members interviewed three finalists including Whitehead.

They voted unanimously to hire the veteran law enforcement officer.

The city manager says Whitehead's police experience and good people skills will help transform the police department's image.

Barney Parnacott says, "He appears to be a very strong people person. He is someone people in the community can go to and talk to. He is a good listener, that is very important as far as community relations."

Whitehead will start work November 1st.  He was selected from a field of 43 applicants to succeed Lee Webb who resigned in April.
