Valdosta- A showdown between two unbeaten teams in the Gulf South Conference was as close as predicted.
Valdosta State and Delta State combined for 99 points and almost 12 hundred yards in offense but it was the Statesmen who come up a yard short in a 51-48 win for the Blazers.
Delta State jumped out to a 17-6 lead over Valdosta State early in the 2nd quarter before the Blazers got touchdown runs from Tyran Robinson and Vincent Brown put the Blazers up 20-17.
The Statesmen answered with a touchdown pass from Scott Eyster to Robert Davis only to see the Blazers answer one play later with a 68 yard touchdown pass from Fabian Walker to Travis Taylor.
Delta State kicker Trey Crum kicked a field goal on the final play of the first half to tie the game
Two more touchdowns in the third quarter put Delta State up 41-30 before the Blazers countered with two more Fabian Walker touchdown passes to re-gain the lead.
The two teams each added a touchdown giving the Blazers a 51-48 lead and the team who had the ball last would likely win this shootout.
Delta State had the football last but with no time outs left tried to run the football from the one yard line for the winning touchdown but time expired before the Statesmen could run another play.
Valdosta State is now 4-0 in the Gulf South Conference and back on the road next week at Henderson State.
