Valdosta - A South Georgia community is celebrating an academic milestone.

Lowndes County is now a certified literate community. Over the past nine years, 51 percent of citizens who didn't have a high school diploma have earned their G.E.D.'s.

The community is celebrating the certification by designating this week as literacy week. Several merchants around town are offering discounts to customers who donate a book.

"If you look at the number of people each year that's been trained to achieve this goal, its actually greater than the number of people that graduated from Lowndes and Valdosta high schools combined, so its a huge achievement," said Marshall Conner, Committee Chairman.

The book donations will go to the Valdosta Public Library and literacy volunteers.

Sumter and Muscogee counties are also certified literate communities.
