Albany -- A little after four Tuesday afternoon Albany Police Corporal Andrew Hayslip and his ex-girlfriend argued outside a Dougherty County Extended Day School building on South Monroe Street.

Hayslip opened fire. He killed his young son and wounded the child's mother and then killed himself.

Albany Police surrounded the old school building, rushing to a shooting. They discovered it was one of their own. Dr. Letty Rayneri, the Director of the Gifted Education program, said "He was in a police uniform. He had shot at a woman, who turned out to be the mother of a little boy, who was his own son."

Thirty-seven-year-old Albany Police Officer Corporal Andrew Hayslip came to the extended daycare program in his patrol car, wearing his uniform, and signed out his four year old son Austin.

In the driveway, he met the mother, Ladonna Wilkerson. Albany Police Lt. Kenn Singleton said "An argument ensued, at this point in time we do not know what the argument was about. At this time, the child's mother and the child were shot. Then the officer placed the weapon towards himself."

Wilkerson was shot in the hand, and underwent surgery at a local hospital. Witnesses say Hayslip then shot his son in the back as he ran toward the building. The four year old died at the hospital.

Hayslip was a 15 year veteran of the force, but was arrested March 31, 2003 for domestic violence. He was charged with terroristic threats, Battery, and cruelty to children. Hayslip went through pre-trial intervention, and was allowed to continue working as a patrol officer.

Teachers say there were about 30 four and five year olds at the school, but none witnessed the shooting.

Stunned officers investigating a horrific crime committed by their friend... counselors have been called in to help Police.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has taken over the case, trying to determine why a well-liked, experienced Police Officer opened fire on his family, killing his four year old son and himself.
