Valdosta-- A quick-thinking woman escaped her captor after being raped.
Early Sunday, a man came to the 20-year-old woman's home and threatened her with a glass bottle when she opened the door. Police say 36-year-old Kennedy Smith kidnapped the woman, raped her behind the Griffin Corporation on Old Clyattville Road, then took her to two different ATMs and made her withdraw money.
She convinced the man to get her a drink from a drive thru, where she managed to escape.
"For somebody who's went through what she went through, able to maintain a calm demeanor, and think of this, we were overwhelmed by her bravery," said Lt. Brian Childress of the Valdosta Police Department.
Shortly after the woman escaped, a Lowndes County Deputy spotted Smith on Interstate 75. He was caught after a short chase and is in the Lowndes County Jail charged with rape, kidnapping and robbery.
