Shelter opens in Valdosta

September 15, 2004

Valdosta - The American Red Cross has opened one shelter in Lowndes County.

Up to 400 evacuees can sleep at Mathis City Auditorium. If that shelter fills up, several churches are on standby to open.

But because many hotels still have vacancies and winds aren't expected to exceed 30 miles per hour, Red Cross officials don't expect many evacuees to show up.

"At this time according to emergency management, there's no evacuations being encouraged even in the situation of mobile homes based on the winds we're expected to receive," said Paige Dukes.

If you do have to stay in an emergency shelter, you're asked to bring a sleeping bag, pillows, blankets, and toiletry items.
