Albany -- United Way of Southwest Georgia kicked off their 2004 fund raising campaign with a laugh.

Dr. Neil Shulman, who teaches medicine at Emory University and wrote the book that inspired the movie "Doc Hollywood", was the keynote speaker.

Known as the Comedy Doctor, Shulman says he believes communities are made stronger by United Way. Dr. Shulman said "Whether it's health, getting food to the hungry, taking care of kids who are disadvantaged, those are the things that make life a great treat."

United Way of South Georgia set a goal of raising one and a-half million dollars, to support 41 area organizations.
