Evacuees stick through the storm at shelters

September 6, 2004

Valdosta - About 450 people are sleeping in emergency shelters in Lowndes County.

The largest shelter is at Mathis City Auditorium where about 100 evacuees are staying. Most of them are from south Florida and don't know when they might return home.

"We're still here because they told us to stay, we have to take 75 all the way home and don't want to get caught in the traffic," said Bernice Simpson.

More evacuees are staying at 13 shelters throughout the county.

Local restaurants are providing food for the evacuees.
