Senate candidate comes to South Georgia school

August 26, 2004

Albany- Education reform is a big issue in the race for a Georgia U.S. Senate seat.

Senate Candidate Johnny Isakson visited students at Magnolia Elementary Thursday.

Magnolia is one of the schools that has seen test score improvements in the past couple of years.

Isakson says he seen schools that are improving because of education reform all over the nation, but pointed out that it is a work in progress and lawmakers will continue to make changes to the law.

"We need to continue to have some flexibility in non-English assessment, so that the schools have enough time to teach a student English before they're assessed," Isakson said.

A recent poll showed Isakson ahead of democratic opponent Denise Majette in the race. They are running for the seat being vacated by Zell Miller.
