Albany - The Darton College soccer teams are ready to open their season this weekend.
The 2002 Georgia junior college champions won the regular season title last year but lost in the semifinals of the region tournament.
This season, coach Ken Veilands' squad is ranked 13th in the national junior college preseason poll but the Cavaliers have just six sophomores back from last year's squad.
That means Darton will depend on 13 freshmen this season but the Cavaliers believe it won't take long for the new guys to get the feel for soccer at the college level.
Sophomore midfielder/forward Chris Hemphill said "Last year's team was good and these guys coming in are just as good and they are just as motivated and we are ready to go."
The Darton Lady Cavaliers are not in the preseason national junior college poll but they too have dreams of a region championship.
The Lady Cavs return six starters from last year's squad that won 16 matches and finished second in the regular season standings.
Among those back are all-region goalkeeper Trina Sorensen from Lee County, former Deerfield-Windsor standout Susie Ealum and last year's leading scoerr Donna Evans.
Sophomore midfielder DonnaEvans said "We should have some good goal scorers and I think we have got some good defenders who have come in and I think we will be strong and we have a very strong goalkeeper. So, all around I think we will be alright."
The Darton Lady Cavs will play Middle Georgia at 2:00pm Saturday afternoon at the Darton Soccer Complex and the men will play Middle Georgia at 4:00pm.
