Leesburg - It was no surprise that Cuba won the gold medal in baseball in Athens, Greece this week.
What was surprising is that the United States didn't even qualify for the Olympic tournament.
Maybe in four years, Lee County High's Buster Posey will have a chance to play for an Olympic baseball gold medal in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China.
Buster Posey is preparing to leave Friday for Taiwan where he is one of 18 players who have been picked to play for the United States Junior National team at the IABF World Junior championships.
The 12 team tournament will feature the very best 17 and under players from around the world.
Team USA coaches have told Buster he will play second base and will pitch and could get the start in an exhibition game against the Cuban junior team before the tournament starts next Friday.
Posey, who played in the AFLAC high school all-American game, is ready to see how he and his American teammates will match up against the very best international squads.
Buster Posey said "You have got Cuba and Japan who are all expected to be powerhouses. So, it is going to be interesting to see how not only I but the rest of us matchup against these people."
The USA junior national squad will play the USA Youth National team in an exhibition game in California on Saturday before the Junior National squad leaves for Taiwan early Sunday morning.
The USA team will play the other five countries in their six-team pool with the top two teams from both pools advancing to the medal round.
