New sickle cell clinic opens

August 25, 2004

Valdosta - A new clinic will provide more convenient care for people suffering from sickle cell anemia.

An adult sickle cell clinic opened in Lowndes County Wednesday. The clinic will offer testing, treatment, and educational classes for sickle cell patients and their families.

Until now...the county only had a specialized clinic for children. Patty Sawyer helped start the program after her daughter had to move to Atlanta for treatment. "My ultimate goal is to have a comprehensive sickle cell center here in Valdosta so they will take care of the total person, socially, psychologically, everything the patient needs," said Sawyer.

The clinic will be open on the fourth Wednesday of every other month at the Lowndes County health department.
