Albany- Your state senator may make as many decisions that affect your life as the President.

Mitchell County native Joe Thomas is running for the District 12 state senate seat. He says important issues in South Georgia haven't been handled.

"We need to make sure we protect our water basin, Flint River Water Basin," Thomas said. "And we need to make sure that there's some type of workable solution of tort reform brought to the table."

Thomas joined the Republican party earlier this year.

He's running against incumbent Michael Meyer Von Bremen.
