Lowndes murder suspect arrested

August 20, 2004

Lowndes County - A South Georgia murder suspect is arrested near Savannah after leading police on a high speed chase.

Police think 23-year-old John Randall Perkins Junior of Savannah shot and killed 23-year-old Mario Maties in Lowndes County Thursday night. Maties had been at church and was on his way home when investigators say he was robbed.

Authorities spotted Randall in Maties truck near Ft. Stewart and chased him for several miles. "The chase actually went into Ft. Stewart where they wrecked him on the boundaries, he got out with a gun then got back in the truck, left again and there was another chase, and they finally wrecked him in Richmond Hill," said Lowndes County Sheriff Ash

Investigators also think Perkins shot a cab driver in Savannah last week and had fled to a relative's home in Lowndes County. The cab driver survived.
