Valdosta - Big housing improvements are on the way for one South Georgia town.

The city of Valdosta is getting more than $230,000 to revamp its housing developments. The money will help with renovations for 11 home owners, and provide down payment assistance and loan guarantees for two families.

City officials say this money will help them meet their goal of eliminating all substandard housing by 2020. "What better way to use these funds than to work on those existing units that are home owner occupied and in need of repair, because every little bit helps when it comes to eliminating substandard housing," said Mara Register, Community Development Director.

The money comes from a state Community Home Investment Program grant.
