Smart Start helps with quality childcare

July 27, 2004

Albany- Many Dougherty County children are getting ahead in life and in education thanks to the Smart Start Program.

Tuesday night, the program celebrated childcare centers and homes they've helped by improving facilities, employee training and overall care of kids.

"That means toys, that means equipment, most of all that means education. Behavioral changes among the staff so that they know how to educate," said Soraya Kimbrel, with Dougherty County Smart Start.

"You see these all over the county," said Senator Michael Meyer Von Bremen (D) Albany. "Very good success stories. And the thing that people need to realize is the investment pays out many times over."

Good child care programs often help prepare children to enter kindergarten. Smart Start is funded through the United Way and through state money.
