Church gives away school supplies

July 24, 2004

Albany- Members of First Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church spent the morning filling bags with candy and school supplies.

"Oftentimes in our community we have children that might not have the things that they need so what we thought we would do is give them a start. We think if you start out on the right foot that you'll maybe end up on the right foot," says Back-to-School Festival Coordinator, LaVonda Lakes.

Each bag is filled with grade appropriate school supplies from Pre-K to high school.

"It makes us feel good to know that we're helping some child to learn and to have the utensils they need in order to make a good grade and do good in school," adds Pastor Gary Sanders.

In addition to the give-aways the church organized fun activities aimed at getting the children energized about going back to school, but many already have an idea of how their school year will play out.

"I think I'm going to go play in my playground at school," says 5 year old Destandreana Norwood.

"I'm going to do a little sports, basketball, football, and track," says 13 year old Jared Jones.

"My favorite thing about last year was I made A, B honor roll. I'm going to try make A honor roll this year," says 9 year old Machalia Baker.

And church members are hoping the new supplies will give the students a head start on carrying out those plans.

This is the second annual Back-to-School Festival and Give-away. Members passed out about 200 bags full of school supplies.
