Albany -- Forty-five-year-old Lillar Evans was found guilty in Magistrate Court of 16 counts of inhumane treatment of animals and 11 counts of unsanitary conditions, and sentenced to served 30 days in jail.

Fourteen dogs and two cats were found near starvation, locked in the house on Almond Drive. Two other dead dogs were found. The pet owner had left the state and hired Evans to care for the animals.

Neighbors say the dogs and cats had been locked in the house three weeks without food before they were rescued. The pets are still being treated at the Albany Humane Society.

No criminal charges have been filed against the pet owner, who is in Colorado.
