Forget boot camp, try beauty camp

July 21, 2004

Thomasville - Like most middle schoolers, these girls spend their time flipping through magazines and checking out the latest fashion trends. Now, they're learning how to set trends of their own.

"Last year we were just going into middle school and we didn't know a lot about fashion," says Karen Head, "This year we get a lot of tips."

Tips they've learned at a beauty camp at the Thomasville YMCA. They've also learned that beauty is about more than just the way you look. Coordinator Joanne Hardy says they, "Learn about skin care, cosmetics, nutrition, exercise and just taking care of themselves."

And how to take care of their wallets, well, their parents wallets, by taking advantage of what they already have. "You can go shopping in your own closets. In your own dressers," says Head.

And you don't have to look like the girls in the magazines to be beautiful. "You can't really base your image on what's in the media or what's in the newspaper or what you see on TV or in the magazines," says Hardy. "It really has to come from within you."

And from the looks of things, beauty is something all of these ladies possess. On Thursday the girls get to test their newfound fashion knowledge on an all day shopping excursion. Friday, they'll be getting new hairstyles.
