'Caretaker' faces charges

July 9, 2004

Albany-- The woman hired to take care of all those animals abandoned in East Albany now faces criminal charges.

Forty-five-year-old Lillar Evans is charged with inhumane treatment of animals and unsanitary conditions. Investigators say Evans was hired by the pet owner to take care of the 18 dogs and cats in April. They say she stopped caring for the animals three weeks ago.

When a neighbor called police, they found horribly starving and dying animals locked inside the house on Almond Drive.

Investigators have not decided if they will file charges against the pet owner, who is still in Colorado.
