The 'future' is bright for English

(Dothan-AP) -- Harris English of Moultrie, Georgia shot a 1-under-par 69 today to win the 13-to-14 age group at the Future Masters golf tournament. English finished the three-round tournament at the Dothan Country Club with a 54-hole total of 206, which is 4-under par and a new championship record.

It's English's second Future Masters title; he won the 2002 tournament by setting a championship record in the 11-12 age division with a two round total of 137.

Will Kropp of Edmond, Oklahoma followed with a 70 and 208 total for second place, and Matthew Giles of New South Wales, Australia finished third after shooting a 69 for a total 210.

The 11-to-12 age group was won by Cory Whitsett of Houston who shot a 66 Tuesday to finish with a total 209. Whitsett began the final round trailing by four strokes but came back to tie Talor Gooch of Midwest City, Oklahoma and beat him on the third hole of a sudden-death playoff.

Will Jones of Rome, Georgia followed with 71 and a total 217. In the 10-and-under group, Jimmy Beck of Columbus, Georgia, claimed the title after shooting a 35 for a two-round total 69. Robby Shelton of Wilmer finished second with 41 and a total 74 and Taylor McCullum of Hoover took third place after shooting a 39 over nine holes for a total 75.

The first round in the 15-to-16 and 17-to-18 age divisions begins Thursday at the Highland Oaks Golf Course.
