Prison guard arrested for drugs

June 14, 2004

Dawson-- A Terrell County prison guard, suspected of dealing drugs to inmates, now finds himself behind bars.

Almost as soon as 21-year-old Garian Street went to work at Terrell County Correction Institute he became the target of investigation by officers in two counties. Now, Street is behind bars on drug possession charges.

Inmates pick up litter in Sasser.  Everyday, as many as 100 inmates from the Terrell County Correctional Institute are put to work. When inmates return,  "All details are searched for drugs or contraband of any type," says Deputy Warden David Chriss.

But, sometimes the drugs are obtained from the inside.  Chriss says,  "Well, anytime you have an officer that is involved with using drugs or selling drugs, you are disappointed because it reflects on everybody."

Correctional officer Garian Street was arrested Saturday night at the Doublegate EEZZ Mart in Lee County.  Lee County Chief Deputy Dennis Parker says, "We had been conducting a pretty lengthy investigation into his activities."

Lee County drug agents had been watching Street for three months, "He was suspected of trafficking in different types of illegal drugs in Lee County."

Street was caught with ecstasy and marijuana--the same drugs correctional officers in Terrell County suspected he was dealing to inmates.  But, that investigation is now over.  Chriss says, "Any employee if they are under investigation, if they get caught using or selling drugs they are terminated."

Street will be fired from his job in light of the Lee County drug charges.  If convicted, he will never work as a correctional officer again.

Garian Street is charged with possession of ecstasy and marijuana. He was arrested with two other people Saturday night.
