Remembering our fallen soldiers

May 31, 2004

Albany-- On Memorial Day, South Georgian veterans remembered their fallen comrades from earlier wars as well as the young soldiers serving in Iraq.

A small ceremony at Albany's historic Oaklawn and Riverside Cemeteries marked the occasion.  It was the first ever Memorial Day remembrance at the downtown cemeteries by the American Legion Post 30.

These aging veterans say they relate to younger servicemen and women. Val Tiernan says, "Once you are a solider you know in your heart all soldiers are just like you. They are doing it because they have courage in their hearts and because God put the courage there and because they are devoted to country."

It was a simple ceremony, with a reading and a prayer. Members of American Legion Post 30 held similar memorials at other cemeteries in the city.
