Friends rebuild historic landmark

May28, 2004

Albany-- Friends of the historic Albany Theater moved one step closer to reopening the classic South Georgia landmark.

The Albany Theater was wildly popular when it opened in the 20's as a movie and performing arts center. But, by the 70's the building fell into disrepair and eventually closed. For the past 7 years, people like Terese Cohen, who grew up attending the theater and seeing the stars who came there, have worked to restore and reopen it.

"I just had stars in my eyes to meet all these wonderful people that I would see on the screen. It was just an exciting time and I hope we will have that again,"says Cohen.

Friday, the Friends of the Theater hosted a private tour for Congressman Sanford Bishop and opened talks aimed at finding funds to refurbish the building.
