Car break-ins on the rise in Americus

May 18, 2004

Sumter County-- A rash of car break-ins in Americus.

There've been nearly 100 vehicle break-ins this year. A few arrests have been made--all of them juveniles.

Interim Police Chief James Green says, "For the most part it is targeting vehicles with items exposed to your view that are very valuable. It makes it more open for these juveniles walking up and down the street to see something and they see a target of opportunity and they break into the car."

Chief Green suspects as kids are let out of school for summer, the number of break-ins could increase.

As a result, extra officers are patrolling the streets, but Chief Green warns to lock your cars and remove valuables from sight.
