Albany - Dougherty County is facing budget struggles that may lead to tax hikes. The County hasn't raised the millage rate in 14 years. But for the last two years, tax revenues have dropped by 1%.
County commissioners are trying to cut the budget instead of raising property taxes. "We've got $8,000,000 in reserves, so it's not like we're sitting around wondering what we're going to do with nothing left," Finance Committee Chairman Lamar Hudgins. "We need to bring our expenditures in line with our revenues which have gone down for the last two years. We still have good reserves, and we want to keep it that way."
County commissioners must finalize the budget by June 30, 2004.
