Valdosta- Valdosta State's men used outstanding results from its spring sports to pad its lead over West Florida in the league's all-sports trophy race, securing the coveted prize for the third time in school history and the second in the last three years.
VSU picked up 36 points in its three spring sports to pull away from the Argonauts and win the coveted trophy by a comfortable 10 1/2 points, 66.5 to 56.
"Hats off to the boys of spring," athletic director Herb Reinhard said. "Of course, all the other men's sports also did a superb job to have us in position to bring home the coveted award for the second time in the last three years. I'm very proud of all our sports."
The women's program, which won its third all-sports trophy in 2001, finished 10th this season.
Valdosta State president Dr. Ronald M. Zaccari will accept the trophy at the annual meeting of GSC presidents, athletic directors and faculty athletic representatives in June in Point Clear, AL.
