Lee County's Parker wins state track title

May 13, 2004

(Jefferson-AP) -- Brookwood senior Antonio Lamar left his mark at the Georgia High School Boys State Track and Field meet.

Lamar set a Class AAAAA state record when he threw the discus 197' 4"s, denting the curb next to the track at Jefferson Memorial Stadium when he overthrew the grass landing area.

He bounced his discus across the track and into the triple jump area, scattering spectators in the process.

He easily beat the previous record of 179' 7" set by Dunwoody's Steve Boecler in 1977.

He was six inches shy of the all-classification record set by Winder-Barrow's Hiawatha Berry in 1985.

Lamar earlier won the shot put, though he was disappointed with his 56'4" effort, boosting Brookwood into the lead after the first day.

Lee County's LaValle Parker won the AAAAA triple jump with at 46' 5 1/4".

Franklin County's John Scott Hartness was the state's top-ranked vaulter and the nation's sixth best when he died in an automobile accident in mid-April.

Teammate Casey Herndon, wearing a black ribbon in memory of Hartness, fittingly won the AAA vault with a personal-best 14'6".

Oconee County sophomore Jordan Scott became only the seventh Georgia schoolboy to vault 15-feet or better in the state meet.

He failed three times trying to raise the AAAAA state record to 15' 6 1/2".

Two more state records were broken today. Brannon Southerland of Greater Atlanta Christian set a AA state record in the discus with a 176'6"toss, bettering the 175'2" mark set by Tyler Biggins of Washington County in 2000.

Carrollton's O'Darine Bassett's meet-best triple jump of 50' 2 1/4"s passed the 1996 AAA record set by Tucker's Dwight Phillips.

Bassett also won the AAA long jump at 23'11 1/4".

Brookwood leads AAAAA with 42 points, but has only one runner qualified for tomorrow's events. Marietta is a distant second with 20.

Chapel Hill leads AAAA with 33 points, followed by Marist with 30.

In AAA, Carrollton narrowly leads Monroe, 26-23.

Early County leads Greater Atlanta Christian, 24-to-23, in AA.

Early County's Darius Williams won the triple jump and Octavious Balkcom finished second in the shot by AA state champion Ricardo Davis of Brooke County.

In Class A, Pelham's Darean Clayton cleared 6'7" to win the state high jump title.

Landmark Christian, winner of seven straight Class A titles, won two events, the pole vault and the 1600 to tie Jefferson for the first-day lead with 20 points.

Jenkins County is one back at 19, and both Commerce and Atlanta International scored 18 apiece.
