Albany--After totaling 54 points after the first eight events, the Westover Lady Patriots posted 54 more on Saturday en route to their first ever state championship in track and field.
As expected, Westover's biggest competition came from cross town rival Monroe, who had won three straight state championships entering this weekend's meet. But after the Lady Patriots built a 34 point lead heading into Saturday, they continued to build on it, winning three more state titles Saturday.
Monroe finished second in AAA with 80 points, 28 behind Westover. The Tornadoettes started the final day off in great form, winning the 4x100 relay and 400m run (Shequita Draper). But Westover proved to be too strong with wins in the 100m (Lakecia Ealey) and 200m (Ealey).
Monroe and Westover combined to win 10 of the 16 events this weekend at Hugh Mills Stadium.
In other classifications, Landmark Christian cruised to their fifth straight state championship after scoring 148 points. The next closest team was Jenkins County with 43 points.
The closest battle came in quad-A, where North Springs edged Marist 43 to 39.
