Thomasville - Retired Army Colonel Danny McKnight visited Thomasville Friday. Colonel McKnight was a Battalion Commander in Mogadishu, Somalia in October of '93, when six of his rangers were killed. Those events were chronicled in the book and movie Black Hawk Down.
Colonel McKnight says, "I always have to say it was the best of times and the worst of times. It was the best of times because it was American soldiers at their finest, doing exactly what they were trained to do, and do it better than anybody else in the world can do it, in my opinion. But it was the worst of times, because I had six of my rangers get killed that day. There were ten others in the task force get killed that day, and anytime you lose one American soldier, it's a bad day."
Colonel McKnight was in the army for more than 28 years. He now teaches Homeland Security at Brevard Community College in Florida.
