Albany--Westover senior Jamila Young literally saved her best for last at Thursday's State Track and Field Meet. Young captured her first ever state title by coming from the back of the pack in the AAA 1600M run.
The Mercer University signee, methodically stayed in the back of the group throughout the race and was even as far back as ninth when she began her third lap. It wasn't until the final lap that Young made her move, slowly passing each and every runner until she moved all the way to second place.
But even in second Young still had a lot of ground to cover to catch Westminster's Sarah Brown, who had a sizeable lead. With 200 meters to go Young made her final kick, passing Brown and eventually going on to capture the AAA state title in 5 minutes and 23 seconds.
"Coach Calhoun and I came up with a plan for me all season to stay in the back. Then I work my way up to the front like (teammate) David Marley. And my last lap is always sub like a 1:17 or something. And so I have a kick on the end, and I kick it in," Young said.
It's the first state title for Young, who's also an accomplished cross country runner.
