Albany-- It might be a first--a brother and sister are given Volunteer of the Year awards!
Joe Farris, Jr. and his sister, 90-year-old Louise Nahra, are long-time volunteers with St. Jude's Hospital.
At Thursday's United Way of Southwest Georgia Volunteer Awards, Joe Farris was honored as the Volunteer of the Year in the Education category.
But, his big sister won the coveted Harry Goldstein Lifetime Volunteer Award, making her baby brother very proud. Joe Farris says, "She has worked so hard for all these years and this is the first time she has ever been honored for this. She had worked for Danny Thomas five years before the hospital was even built. He came to Douglas to put on a show, and he asked her to help raise money, and she couldn't turn him down. She has been working ever since."
This brother and sister duo travel to St. Jude's Hospital in Tennessee twice a year--once in July and once at Christmas--to bring presents to the sick kids. For Joe, this July will be his 85th trip.
