Valdosta - A South Georgia police department is making sure children are protected from guns.

The Valdosta Police Department hopes to give away 700 free firearm safety kits this week. Each kit contains a gun lock and information on properly securing guns.

"The purpose of this promotion is to prevent any child or unauthorized person from access to a gun in your home," said Vernotis Williams.

You can pick up a free firearm safety kit at the Valdosta Police Department Wednesday. Officers will also be distributing the kits at Super Walmart between 2:00 and 4:00 Thursday.
