Cairo-- Basketball Coach Isiah Chance calls Clifford Hammonds a coach's dream. Unfortunately for Chance, he won't get to live that dream anymore. Instead, that honor will go to Clemson's Oliver Purnell.
The star signed with the Tigers Wednesday, the first day of the late signing period for college basketball. The four year starter averaged over 22 points and seven rebounds a game, while leading the Syrupmakers to the Class 4-A semifinals this past season.
Hammonds was also a standout on the football field for Cairo, catching five touchdowns and snagging two interceptions his senior season.
Hammonds says he still plans to play football, but not until his junior year, and until then he'll concentrate on trying to help an up and coming Clemson hoops team. "Coach Purnell at Clemson, I felt like he had the most interest in me as a person. And I know that this program at Clemson is going to be on the uprise in the next couple of years, and I want to be a part of that," Hammonds said.
Hammonds chose Clemson over Stanford and Mercer. The all-state selection is also a standout in the classroom boasting a 4.0 GPA and 1140 SAT.
