Jailer sentenced to prison

April 9, 2004

Albany -- A former Dougherty County jailer was sentenced to six months in prison for covering up violence against an inmate.

33-year-old Kevin Clark was a sergeant and supervisor at the jail in March 2002 when jailer Stephanie Henry used excessive force in subduing an inmate. Clark pleaded guilty to falsifying a report about the incident.

Saying that integrity by law enforcement officers must be enforced, Judge Louis Sands sentenced Clark to six months in prison and fined him 3,000 dollars.

Clark's attorney Mark Prickett said "I think the sentence was excessive, yes. We had hoped for a sentence of probation. In federal sentencing he will do all six months, and then try to get on with his life."

Clark was fired by the sheriff when he pleaded guilty and cannot work in law enforcement again.

Clark is free on bond until he reports to prison in about two months.
