Americus-- There are a couple of different stories. The town was founded in 1832. Some people say it was named after famed explorer Amerigo Vespucci. Others claim the name comes from the phrase "a merry cuss"-- referring the high-spirited people who founded the city.
Americus was one of the first southern cities to install electric street cars. At one point, it grew to be Georgia's eighth largest city. Now it has a population of about 18,8000.
It's also home to Georgia Southwestern State University, with an enrollment of more than 2,600 students from 25 states and 37 countries.
