Popular police chief leaving

April 5, 2004

Americus-- A popular South Georgia Police Chief is leaving the force.

Americus Police Chief Mike Yates only served for three years, but the crime rate went down while officer productivity increased.

During his tenure there was zero turnover in the department.

Yates is taking a job as head of the new multi-county 9-1-1 Center, "I like a challenge and it's an opportunity to do something that nobody in the state of Georgia has done before so hopefully I will be successful at it."

The 9-1-1 Center will be located in Ellaville and will serve seven counties. Lt. James Green will serve as interim Chief. Yates' last day is Tuesday.
