April 4, 2004

Albany-- April 4th marks the tragic anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Junior a man many considers Americas biggest champion for civil rights.

On this day in 1968, Dr. King was shot by James Earl Ray while standing on a hotel balcony in Memphis, Tennessee. King who preached non-violent resistance was in Memphis to support a striking city sanitation worker.

An exhibit at the Martin Luther King National Historic Site in Atlanta is displaying several artifacts, documents and photographs relating to King's death. The exhibit runs through the end of April.
