Free compost for Lowndes County residents

March 31, 2004

Valdosta - A South Georgia city is turning trash into a useful product.

Valdosta's public works department is combining the city's yard trash with food scraps from Valdosta State Prison to make compost. The finished product is available free to anyone who lives in Lowndes County.

"The compost is good for planting or gardens instead of using regular pine straw, and its very good for the plants," said Public Works Director Pete Pyrzenski.

Anyone who wants to pick up a bag of free compost can visit the public works site on Val-Tech road. They're open Monday through Friday between 7:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.
