Buena Vista man shot outside girlfriend's home

March 30, 2004

Dawson-- A man is shot dead in front of his girlfriend's home. Investigators say the shooting might have stemmed from an earlier fight.

33-year-old Terry Crawford had just joined the Army and would have left for basic training in a month. Crawford was new to Dawson. He moved there from his long-time home in Buena Vista.

According to his girlfriend, Crawford wasn't here long enough to have an enemy. But, investigators think Crawford might have simply been in the wrong place at the wrong time. Tracy Gorham says, "I am confused and I am upset."

A large blood stain marks the spot where Crawford was shot and killed. Gorham says, "Basically they were out here talking, that's what I thought was going on. I didn't know no commotion was going on out here."

Tracy Gorham, Crawford's live-in girlfriend, was asleep inside her 1st Avenue home when Crawford was shot. She says Crawford was hanging out with some friends, "I just heard a commotion, someone hit my wall and that is what got me up."

Tracy walked outside--  that's when she saw police lights, "My son was sitting right here on the porch and he said 'Terry got shot'. I said 'Boy, don't play with me' just like that. So I went back in the house and sat there for a minute and I came back out."

Crawford was lying dead from a shotgun wound. Tracy says she doesn't know why anyone would want to hurt him, "No I don't know, I really don't know. I didn't think he had any enemies in that little short time."

But, investigators say a man Crawford was hanging out with had an earlier argument with two other men--which might have triggered the shooting.

The GBI is searching for two men in the shooting.
