Adult softball held up by City mistake

March 17, 2004

Albany - A big strike out for adult softball in Albany, after a miscommunication postpones the start of the season.

The fields at Gordon Sports Complex aren't usually empty this time of year. But, the recreation director put the adult recreation softball season on hold while city commissioners discussed cutting some adult programs, so more money could be used for youth sports.

But, the City was planning for the 2005 season and had no idea adult recreation softball wasn't already underway. "I've been coming out here every Sunday for the past month, and these fields are full of teams practicing softball," said concerned softball player Roy Clark. "Some of them had no idea what was going on. I went around and told them what was going on, and they couldn't believe they may not play softball."

Instead of cutting adult sports, city commissioners tentatively agreed to increase adult fees by 20%. Fees have not gone up in more than 10 years.

The City says registration for adult softball should begin as soon as next week, and the season should start as soon as possible.
