Blazers open spring drills

March 5, 2004

Valdosta-Valdosta State fans were thrilled two months ago when quarterback Fabian Walker transferred to the Blazers from Florida State.

On Friday, Walker stepped onto the practice field for the first time at Valdosa State as the Blazers began spring practice.

Walker came to Valdosta State because he wanted the chance to play in what will be his final season of college eligibility.

But like Dusty Bonner, who transferred to VSU from Kentucky, Chris Hatcher is not just giving Walker the starting job.

In fact Walker's competition for the starting quarterback job is little bit tougher than what Bonner faced when he arrived.

The Blazers got another Division Ie transfer in Auburn's Allen Tillman and also return Barrett Wilkes and Buster Faulkner, both of whom have been the Blazer starting quarterbacks in the last two seasons.

Chris Hatcher said "And we got some other guys that have been playing awfully well so it is going to be a big battle. He has got to learn the system and earn the confidence of his team if he wants to be the starting quarterback going into next fall's practice."

The Blazers will hold three scrimmages during their 15 spring practice sessions with the Red and Black game set for March 30th at 7:00 p.m. at Lowndes' Martin Stadium.
