Albany's smoking ordinance is model for other cities

March 3, 2004

Albany - Many of the cities now implementing smoking bans are looking at Albany's ordinance.

Albany adopted an smoking ban in 1995. Under the ordinance, smoking is prohibited in all public buildings unless a business has a designated smoking room with a separate ventilation system.

City Manager Janice Allan Jackson says other cities are modeling their smoking bans after Albany's. "Over the last year and a half, we received several phone calls from cities asking about our ordinance. They want to know how it's working," said Jackson.

Bars are excluded from the City's smoking ordinance. Albany was one of the first two cities in the state to adopt a smoking ban.
