Deputy fired for campaigning

February 20, 2004

Sylvester- Tommy Adams, who's been a deputy for 14 years was fired on February 14th. Sheriff Freddie Tompkins says he fired Adams because he was campaigning on the job and announced his candidacy in the newspaper, long before the April 26th qualifying date.

"I had to do what I had to do. I said well Tommy your going to force me to have to terminate you because you can't work here and campaign too. I said when your out here working you're representing me. I said you're not representing me when you're out here working," Tompkins says.

Adams says he has no hard feelings against his former boss and is not upset about being let go. He says he still intends to run a positive campaign.
