Cordele-- Under scrutiny for it's public defender program, the Cordele Judicial Circuit is now the test case for a new system.

A December lawsuit against the Cordele Judicial Circuit by the Southern Center for Human Rights alleges that poor defendants are not given proper representation.

Now, the Circuit, which represents Crisp, Dooly, Ben Hill and Wilcox counties, will have a new public defender office beginning in April. A little more than $300,000 will be given to the new office, that will employ three full time defenders, an investigator and an office administrator.

That's in addition to the $190,000 already set aside by the counties for the public defender system.
