S. Georgia teacher hit and killed by car

February 16, 2004

Cairo - 59-year old Joyce Whitfield was crossing North Broad Street in Cairo near Third Avenue around 11 PM Saturday.

She was struck by a Ford Escort driven by 18 year old Matthew James Green of Cairo. Witnesses say Green had the right of way and did not see Whitfield crossing the road.

Principal Patsy Clark of Eastside school, where Whitfield taught, says she will be missed by the staff and the many children she influenced. "She was one of those hard-working, everyday teachers that came to school, worked with her kids," says Clark. "She made improvement, she made an impact on her kids. She was just one of those unsung heroes."

Mrs. Whitfield was transported to Archbold memorial hospital in Thomasville, where she later died. No charges have been filed, but the case is still under investigation.
