January 29, 2004

Baton Rouge, La.-LSU head coach Nick Saban continues to look to the state of Georgia for assistant coaches.

Former Georgia standout and Valdosta State assistant Kirby Smart has been named secondary coach for the national champion Tigers.

Smart, who has been a graduate assistant at Florida State the last two years, will be reunited with LSU's defensive coordinator Will Muschamp.

Smart and Muschamp were not only teammates at Georgia but Smart was defensive backs coach at Valdosta State when Muschamp was the Blazers defensive coordinator in 2000

The former Bainbridge High standout was promoted by Chris Hatcher to the defensive coordinator job the following season after Muschamp left for LSU.
